Metamorphosis
How can two-dimensional textile design become three-dimensional?
As a textile designer I work predominantly two-dimensional. During the joint project "Metamorphosis" with Michèle Lemper, it became clear that textile design takes on a whole new function by moving into three-dimensionality.
Using the innovative technology of laser cutting, incisions are made in a textile so that its shape characteristics are manipulated. This technique is normally used with wood to shape the solid material through incisions. When used with textiles, new possibilities are opened up.
Not only do incisions change the drape of a textile, but they can also create new plastic forms. This processing makes it possible to cut a piece to fit the shape of the body without the need for darts.
In order for a textile to move in this way, the incisions must be made with a certain regularity of simple shaping. For the pattern development, I orientated myself on the architecture of Brutalism. To give lightness to the patterns and to make the optical effect more exciting, the elements were transformed and rearranged.
